Boyhood – A film 12 years in the making

how they made boyhoodWhat are you doing for the next 12 years?” That was how Richard Linklater asked Patricia Arquette to star in this unique and ground-breaking film.

The film focuses on a fictional family and how they change over the years. How relationships change. How people grow up and change. The triumphs and tragedies. Think what you have done over the last 12 years – I strugle to remember what I did yesterday let alone over a decade ago. It looks amazing from the below trailer and feature.

The way that these films are normally made is to film over a couple of months, changing the children when they age. Put the adults in make-up and hope for the best.

Richard decided that that wasn’t the way to go to show this sort of film. It is a mad idea. Film over years not months and see where it takes you. He also managed to make 9 other films in that time as well!

It was a massive undertaking with a cast that was huge and a crew that was even bigger! 143 cast members and over 400 crew personnel. Yes I know, That’s just the visual effects crew for a major blockbuster but not for an independent film whose budget wasn’t anywhere near the money that that sort of film costs.

Filmed over short periods from 2002 to 2013, Boyhood is a ground-breaking cinematic experience covering 12 years in the life of a family. At the center is Mason, who with his sister Samantha, is taken on an emotional and transcendent journey through the years, from childhood to adulthood.

Growing into UK cinemas from July 11, 2014
